ABOUT
1851 is a design studio founded by Anton Erbenich that combines workshop practice with architectural thinking. While wood, metal and manufacturing processes shaped his understanding of construction early on, studying architecture sharpened his sense of proportion, spatial effect and design. Additive manufacturing is therefore the logical next step for him: it is precise, resource-efficient and allows for free geometry. The name ‘1851’ refers to the World's Fair in London, where the Crystal Palace showed how natural principles and technology can find new lightness through modular industrial construction – a leitmotif of the studio. 1851 designs loudspeakers, lights and furniture as unique pieces, small series and scalable lines. Quartz sand is printed into housings, stainless steel is bent into supporting lines and mineral textures meet flowing radii. The result is objects that are technically impressive and yet appear organic. Aesthetics follow function: near-spherical volumes ensure calm acoustics, decoupled suspensions protect against structure-borne noise, and precise light guidance is guaranteed. Production takes place predominantly in Germany, resulting in short distances and clear standards. Repairable constructions and modular electronics ensure the longevity of the products. For 1851, high-end means care – a dialogue between nature and technology, structure and atmosphere.
